Eikichi Onizuka is twenty-two years old, an ex-biker gang member, a virgin by circumstance rather than choice, and the greatest teacher Japan has ever produced.

He decides to become a teacher to meet high school girls. This is his stated goal. He announces it openly. Within approximately four episodes he has forgotten this completely because the job has got him by the throat and he cannot let go.

Based on Tohru Fujisawa's manga and produced by Studio Pierrot, Great Teacher Onizuka aired on Fuji TV in 1999. Forty-three episodes built around a premise that should produce a comedy and instead produces something considerably more complicated - a show about a man with no qualifications, no social graces, and no conventional wisdom who turns out to be exactly what a generation of traumatized, cynical, system-broken teenagers needed. Not because he is wise. Because he refuses to give up on them when the system already has.

The comedy is real and it is frequently unhinged. The drama is also real and it earns every moment. The balance between them is the achievement - GTO never lets either mode undercut the other. When it is funny it is genuinely funny. When it lands an emotional beat it has set that beat up across multiple episodes and you did not see it coming.

The live action drama with Takashi Sorimachi aired the year before and was enormous in Japan. The anime is better. This is the version that circulated through fansub networks. This is the version this archive preserves.

Eikichi Onizuka

Homeroom Teacher / Class 3-4 Mastermind

A 22-year-old, virgin, former legendary biker gang co-leader who enters the teaching profession for the absolute worst reason imaginable: to marry a high school girl when he's old and gray. However, the second he's handed Holy Forest Academy's most toxic, teacher-breaking homeroom class, Onizuka reveals himself as an absolute operational savior. He doesn't care about textbooks or standardized metrics; he handles systemic bullying, teenage extortion, and deep-seated familial trauma by smashing concrete walls with a sledgehammer, jumpscares in a gorilla suit, and jumping off school roofs to catch falling students.

Azusa Fuyutsuki

Fellow Teacher / Institutional Ally

A sweet, deeply earnest, and highly traditional language teacher who starts at Holy Forest Academy at the exact same time as Onizuka. Fuyutsuki represents the standard, idealistic educator who gets rapidly chewed up and spit out by the school's cynical political climate and cruel student body. While she is initially completely horrified by Onizuka's loud mouth, chain-smoking, and utter lack of academic decorum, she rapidly becomes his closest confidante, realizing that his reckless, raw sincerity is the only thing capable of actually protecting these kids.

Hiroshi Uchiyamada

Vice Principal / Primary Adversary

Holy Forest Academy's hyper-stressed, ulcer-ridden Vice Principal who views Onizuka as a radioactive, career-destroying bioweapon. Uchiyamada is a textbook bureaucrat who values institutional reputation, league tables, and bowing to wealthy parents over the actual well-being of the students. He spends 90% of his screen time desperately trying to find a legal loophole to get Onizuka fired, and the other 10% weeping over the structural annihilation of his beloved, pristine Toyota Cresta, which keeps getting crushed by falling bodies.

Yoshito Kikuchi

Class 3-4 Genius / Structural Analyst

The undisputed operational brain of Class 3-4. Sporting an IQ of 180 and a state-of-the-art laptop, Kikuchi is a clinical, detached computer genius who specialized in destroying his previous homeroom teachers via masterfully engineered, highly compromising digital Photoshop blackmail. When he tries to execute the same cyber-warfare blueprint on Onizuka, the biker simply laughs it off and defends him from a gang of local thugs, turning the classroom's most dangerous strategic asset into Onizuka's very first loyal ally.

Urumi Kanzaki

Specialized Genius / Psychological Terror

A multi-lingual, heterochromatic super-genius student who returns to Class 3-4 with a singular goal: absolute institutional terrorism. Traumatized by a cold mother and a previous teacher's devastating betrayal, Urumi views adults as sub-human hypocrites and uses her advanced understanding of chemistry, psychology, and legal loopholes to push faculty members to the brink of suicide. She is the ultimate final boss of the student body, running circles around the administration until Onizuka takes her on an illegal, high-speed motorcycle ride to an arcade and shows her what real, unvarnished trust looks like.

Kunio Murai

Frontline Delinquent / Defensive Leader

A fiercely defensive, short-tempered delinquent who acts as the boots-on-the-ground muscle for Class 3-4's anti-teacher coalition. Murai's entire life revolves around protecting his close friends and keeping a vigilant, highly aggressive eye on his ridiculously young, attractive, and overly friendly mother. Onizuka constantly exploits this boundary, crashing Murai's apartment to eat his dinner and take his mom out on dates, driving the poor kid into a perpetual state of red-faced, vein-popping psychological fury before eventually earning his deep, unshakeable respect.

Miyabi Aizawa

Class 3-4 Shadow Ringleader / Master Puppetmaster

The elegant, fiercely bitter, and terrifyingly cold shadow leader of Class 3-4's anti-teacher crusade. Driven by a deep, absolute hatred for educators due to a horrific past institutional betrayal that shattered her trust, Miyabi is the operational mastermind who keeps the class unified in their sabotage. While others like Kikuchi and Murai eventually cave to Onizuka’s raw sincerity, Miyabi digs her heels in, escalating her tactics from petty classroom pranks to framing Onizuka for kidnapping and ruinous extortion. She is the definitive human wall Onizuka has to break down to save the class.

Tomoko Nomura

Bumbling Sweetheart / Idol Prodigy

Class 3-4's notoriously clumsy, slow-witted, and spacey girl who is constantly bullied and treated as a disposable pawn by her childhood friend, Miyabi. Dubbed "Toroko" by the class because of her bumbling nature, her life completely changes when Onizuka notices her genuine, towering physical beauty and sweet disposition. Completely bypassing standard school protocols, Onizuka aggressively enters her into a high-profile national talent and idol swimsuit pageant. His chaotic, unyielding hype transforms the school outcast into a genuine national celebrity, giving her the confidence to stand on her own two feet.

Ryuji Danma

Biker Brother / Voice of Reason

Onizuka’s legendary co-leader from their days dominating the Shonan motorcycle gang scene. Now running a legitimate, successful local motorcycle repair shop, Ryuji functions as Onizuka’s absolute civilian reality check, financial lender, and drinking buddy. Whenever Onizuka gets into a massive, career-ending jam—or needs a high-speed getaway vehicle to pull off an illegal psychological stunt for a student—Ryuji is the guy who shows up with the gear. She hires Onizuka on pure, chaotic instinct after watching him deliver a devastating German Suplex to a corrupt bureaucrat. Frequently disguised as the school's friendly, sweet-natured cafeteria lunch lady to covertly spy on student morale, she functions as Onizuka’s ultimate institutional shield, blocking Vice Principal Uchiyamada's endless legal attempts to fire him.

Noboru Yoshikawa

The Bullying Victim / First Salvation

A quiet, fragile, and deeply isolated student in Class 3-4 who spends his nights escaping reality through hardcore video games. Yoshikawa is the victim of severe, agonizing psychological and physical bullying at the hands of a clique of popular girls in his class. Driven to the absolute brink of suicide, he is saved in dramatic fashion when Onizuka catches him mid-air off the school roof. By hanging out in his room, playing co-op fighter games, and aggressively trashing the houses of his bullies, Onizuka restores his will to live, turning Yoshikawa into a fiercely loyal ally.

He returns to Class 3-4 as an absolute wrecking ball, systematically paying off the student body to ruin Onizuka. His cynical armor is only shattered when Onizuka calls his bluff during a terrifying game of chicken involving a falling steel beam, showing him that some adults can't be bought.

Suguru Teshigawara

Unstable Math Teacher / Dark Mirror

A highly elite, Todai-educated math teacher who acts as the absolute dark psychological mirror to Onizuka's unconventional teaching style. Teshigawara masks a deeply unhinged, dangerous obsession with Azusa Fuyutsuki behind his pristine academic credentials. He goes to the terrifying extremes of physically bugging her apartment and plotting murderous sabotage against Onizuka. He is the ultimate proof that an Ivy League degree doesn't stop someone from being a complete, systemic monster.
